STARS is an innovative project that aims to transform sports education and training. It brings together an alliance of Ministries, Sports Schools, Sport Federations and Associations, and Expert Enterprises. With the first Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) in sport funded through the Erasmus+ programme of the EU, the project aims to transform the sport workforce ensuring it is fit for the future. It will work at the European and national levels, create innovative new products across the full range of activities of the sector, and create bridges between academia, sports institutions, and the professional world. Through collaboration, innovative methodologies, and extensive research, STARS will create sustainable impact, leave a lasting legacy in sports education and shape the future of sports professionals, fostering excellence across Europe.

The main objectives of the STARS CoVE are:

  • Regional development, innovation and smart specialisation strategies in the sport sector, by establishing a bottom-up approach making the project a positive change and sustainable initiative for the sport sector
  • Continuous upskilling and reskilling of the sport workforce of paid employees and volunteers by identifying specific skill gaps and providing high-quality trainings aligned with the job-related key competences and current needs
  • Innovative and sustainable forms of skills partnerships to support an inclusive and sustainable economy of the sport sector

The first year of the project will see the establishment of skills partnerships at the EU and national level using the Pact for Skills methodology.

A further core element of the STARS project is the eight “Building Blocks” which are thematic areas led by members of the STARS partnership with the aim to produce essential products and courses in support of the whole sport sector at the European level.
