EDUGOLF PROJECT
Modernising education and training to meet the changing skills needs of golf in Europe
The EDUGOLF project has been funded under the Erasmus+ Sport Programme of the European Union (Call 2020) and has a duration of 3 years, running up to December 2023.
Background
EOSE is delighted to join forces again with the Confederation of Professional Golf (CPG, www.cpg.golf) to lead this innovative golf education and skills development project.
Golf, as a major participation sport in Europe, has unique attributes which can stimulate and sustain the participation of people from all segments of society and play a leading role in increasing levels of physical activity and improve both physical and mental health for participants in all age groups and diverse communities. However, for golf to achieve its potential and have the maximum impact across the EU, those involved in the sport must recognise that society is changing, and the way people engage with sport, and specifically how they engage with golf, is also changing.
The EDUGOLF project is founded on the principle that adapting to change can revitalise the sport and allow it to meet its potential to improve the lives of individuals and society as a whole.
The focus of the 3-year EDUGOLF project will be on skills development and education reform, firmly rooted in the belief that those working in golf, in both paid and voluntary positions (and those wishing to do so in the future), are the key to the future of the sport.
The main target group for this project is wide and includes anybody working as paid staff or those with the ambition to pursue a career in servicing the game of golf or the golf industry. The aim is also to expand the volunteer base to further benefit the sport and participation.
Aim
The project also aims to:
- inform new systems and structures in European golf education, underlined by current realities and challenges, founded on a solid research base;
- define the skills and competences needed for the future sustainability of golf by those working in the game;
- upskill professionals in golf and volunteers through innovative education and training products to develop the skills to meet the new roles in and for golf.
For the purposes of EDUGOLF, professionals in golf are defined as:
“anybody involved in or wishing to pursue a career in servicing the game of golf or the golf industry. This could be for example golf coaches, working at any level, in a paid or voluntary capacity, but also “PGA Professional” which is a defined job role with a focus on coaching, but which includes other skills elements as well. Professionals in golf can also refer to those running a golf facility, and finally people supporting the coaching process, such as parents supporting introductory golf lessons”.
Thus, the main target group is wide and includes anybody working as paid staff or those with the ambition to pursue a career in servicing the game of golf or the golf industry. The aim is also to expand the volunteer base to further benefit the sport and participation.
Expected Outputs
OUTPUT 1: A Research report on changing realities and tendencies of the golf labour market and education requirements
The Research Report will examine the nature, structure and size of the golf industry, explore current and emerging trends, and identify labour and educational requirements now and into the future.
OUTPUT 2: European Occupational Standards for golf
This output will build on the broad research base of the project and provide an analysis of the main functions staff need to carry out if their organisations are to flourish in the new operating environment. These functions will be further developed into occupational standards which will establish clear benchmarks of excellent practice and a knowledge specification for key principles, theories, processes and facts which staff need to be competent in their jobs.
OUTPUT 3: An Education and Training Handbook for golf in Europe
The Education and Training Handbook for golf in Europe will provide advice, direction and guidance for the development of learning programmes to help professionals in golf (paid and volunteers) reach the competence required to work in a variety of roles in golf.
OUTPUT 4: An innovative online learning to meet the changing skills needs of golf in Europe
Using the principles and content of the Education and Training Handbook, the partnership will select the most relevant topics and design and develop detailed content and structured material for each of them in the form of e-learning courses.
OUTPUT 5: A sustainable Strategic Action Plan to meet the changing skills needs of golf
This is the final step of the adapted model. Its main goals will specify through the partnership the framework and quality processes needed to ensure continuity and implementation of the Occupational Standards, Education and Training Handbook, and online learning through legacy, endorsement, or accreditation.
Partnership
Coordianated by the European Observatoire of Sport and Employment (EOSE), the EDUGOLF project creates a powerful alliance of stakeholders to achieve the project’s ultimate goal.
These include the two types of golf organisation active at the national level in golf, the “federations” and “PGAs” (Professional Golfers Associations).
Two specialist sport universities are included to support innovative research activity and showcase how the golf industry and academia can work together to create effective and accredited golf education programmes.
The involvement of a specialist golf and disability organisation, EDGA, demonstrates EDUGOLF’s commitment to opening up golf to all segments of society.
