A national round table on skills organised in Cyprus


Photo_Steve_Cyprus_Sept2017As part of the EOSE Annual Work Programme 2017 to support its national Members, Stephen Studd, EOSE Director of Development, attended a Skills Round Table hosted and led by the University of Nicosia on 20 September 2017.

The purpose of the event was to open a dialogue with key stakeholders in the sport and physical activity sector in Cyprus on the key issues around workforce development in the Sector.

14 Sport Federations, the Cyprus Sport Organisation, the Ministry for Education and the National Olympic Committee where among those who accepted invitations to attend the introductory event.

Stephen took the opportunity to introduce the European Sector Skills Alliance for Sport and Physical Activity, to explain the project and to invite the representatives of sport in Cyprus to get involved in the forthcoming consultation on the labour market and skill needs of sport in Cyprus.

_MG_8486Professor Nicos Kartakoullis, EOSE Board Member from the University of Nicosia, then led an open discussion from which it was clear that there was strong interest and support for the project. It was accepted that the time was appropriate to better understand these issues and participants welcomed the opportunity to make their views known and to address the needs of the future in a practical way.

Researcher at the University, Christina Loizou presented some of the initial findings from the desk research and outlined the consultation opportunities in 2018.

EOSE looks forward to moving this work forward as part of the ESSA project to produce a national report on employment and skills in sport and action plan for Cyprus led by the University research team and with the full involvement of the key sector representatives.
