Context: The Validation of Acquired Experience (Validation des Acquis de l’Expérience, VAE) was introduced via the Social Modernisation Law of 2002 (Government of France, 2002) and extended by further laws (including the Decentralisation Act of 2004; Government of France, 2004), as well as many agreements between professional sectors or companies.
Brief description of the initiative (aim and activities): The strong legal base gives the right to each individual to have his or her formally, informally and non-formally acquired experience assessed. Anyone, regardless of age, nationality, status or level of education, which justifies of at least three years of experience in direct relation with the intended certification, is eligible for VAE. This certification can be a diploma, a title or a certificate of qualification must be listed in the national directory of professional certifications (RNCP).

Main results: More than 60 000 people received counseling interview in 2013, 16% of them had no diploma, 51 % were job seekers. The VAE project was confirmed in 69% of cases (46 000 files) after this first counseling interview.
