The Skills for You(th) through Sport (SKYS) is a transnational initiative of European sport, youth organisations and educational institutions in order to raise awareness on soft skills and competences gained through sport practice and to build capacity of these organisations to implement sport based employment programmes. The two years long project builds on a cross-sectoral approach of sport, youth, employment and education policies of the European Union and on the outcomes of the Study on the contribution of sport to the employability of young people in the context of the Europe 2020 strategy. Through strengthened cooperation, the project aims to increase recognition of transferable skills that sport can develop for young people – especially those not in employment, education or training.

Organisations involved in the SKYS project acknowledged the urging need to strengthen the recognition of transversal skills and competences gained through sport practice and to promote education through sport programs (both Sport Plus and Plus Sport initiatives) that aim to increase the employability of young people. Through collecting and classifying European best practices, the SKYS project aims to develop knowledge and expertise of European youth and grassroots sport organisations and interested stakeholders. Through developing an accessible, online educational module we aim to multiply this knowledge and empower youth organisations, NGOs, sport clubs, trainers and coaches to develop their own initiatives. In order to raise awareness on the potential of sport in skills development and to introduce the outcomes of the project an open seminar will be organized with the participation of decision-makers, researchers and practitioners from across the sectors of sport, education and youth sectors.

Main objectives of the project:

  1. Raising awareness on soft skills gained through sport through increased cross sector cooperation;
  2. Empowering and building capacity of sport and youth organisations, educational institutions to develop and deliver sport based employability programs for young people;
  3. Collection, classification and promotion of European good practices in the field of skills development through sport and sport based employability programmes.
