EOSE attend Baltic Black Sea Economic Forum in Lithuania

For their 5th annual Forum, the Baltic Black Sea Economic Forum chose to focus on the economic impact of sport as their theme and selected Klaipeda to host the event as a key part of its celebrations as the European City of Sport for 2018.

The event was attended by over 120 delegates from the sport sector in Lithuania and neighbouring countries with strong representation from municipalities, grassroots sport and Universities.

The event was moderated by Prof Vilma Cingiene, EOSE Board Member from Mykolas Romeris University, the EOSE National Coordinator for Lithuania.

Keynote presentations and workshops covered key topics about sports economic contribution, the role of municipalities and infrastructure development. Experience from Iceland, Turkey, Denmark, Netherlands, the UK and Germany was shared with delegates.

Stephen Studd on behalf of EOSE, made a keynote presentation on employment in sport drawing on the labour market research from the ESSA-Sport project. The key issues of the importance of skills and understanding the needs of employers were further discussed in a lively workshop on the second day.

Delegates debated the role of volunteers and compared their qualification needs with the expectations of professionals in coaching, contrasting the Danish situation with that of Lithuania and highlighting the potential of the sector for entrepreneurship, the growth of self-employment and job creation.
